Is your basement ready for the winter season?

Updated: Mar 31, 2020

The new year is here and the Winter season as well, there is nothing more danger in your home than an improperly waterproofed basement! We've said it before and we'll say it again: it is absolutely crucial to make sure you've taken all the proper waterproofing measures for your home before it gets too cold. There are a small number of waterproofing techniques that are best done in winter, such as polyurethane crack injections, but all exterior waterproofing work, including excavation, is much better to take care of before the temperatures drop too low. One of the biggest reasons for this is that during the winter, the ground is subject to multiple freeze and thaw cycles, which increases the chances of cave-ins, making excavation not only difficult, but also dangerous. These cave-ins may require you to perform extra excavation than you had originally planned for, and you might not have room on your property for all that extra dirt.

The cold also makes waterproofing the foundation of your home a much harder process. For one thing, any coating applied to the foundation of a home in cold temperatures must be solvent-based. Any water based product will simply freeze. Solvent-based coating isn't hard to find, but small details like this that wouldn't make much of a difference in warmer temperatures can have a huge impact on whether or not your home is properly waterproofed this winter.

Most importantly, when it's cold outside, everyone wants to spend their time comfortably inside their homes. If you're proactive and take care of waterproofing your home before it's too late, this will be no problem. The last thing you want is to have to stress about water finding its way into your home, especially when the snows come and eventually start to melt. If you haven't taken the necessary precautions to waterproof your home yet, there's still time! United Waterproofing can help you get those last minute waterproofing jobs done so that you can have peace of mind and fully enjoy the Winter season.
